Heating & Cooling Best Practices for Home Owners

Change Air Filters Regularly: Check monthly, change every 1-3 months to maintain air quality and efficiency.
Schedule Annual Maintenance: Arrange professional tune-ups for A/C in spring and heating in fall.
Clear Outdoor Unit: Keep at least 2 feet of space around the condenser free of leaves, dirt, and shrubbery.
Use a Smart/Programmable Thermostat: Optimize temperatures automatically when home or away to save energy.
Keep Vents Unblocked: Ensure registers are not covered by furniture or carpets to allow proper airflow.
Seal Air Leaks: Add weatherstripping to doors and caulk windows to prevent conditioned air from escaping.
Check Condensate Drain: Clean the drain line to prevent clogs that lead to water damage and mold.
Clean Evaporator/Condenser Coils: Dirty coils reduce efficiency; clean them annually to improve heat transfer.
Use the "20 Degree Rule": Avoid setting the A/C more than 20 degrees lower than the outside temperature to avoid overworking the unit.
Check Duct Insulation: Insulate ducts in unconditioned spaces like attics.
Inspect Ductwork: Seal gaps in ducts with mastic sealant or metal tape to prevent air leaks.
Don't Close Too Many Vents: Closing too many vents increases pressure and reduces system efficiency.
Install Insulation: Properly insulate your attic and walls to reduce the workload on your HVAC system.
Use Ceiling Fans: Fans allow you to raise the thermostat setting in summer without losing comfort.
Reverse Ceiling Fans in Winter: Run fans clockwise at low speed to push warm air down.
Upgrade to High-Efficiency Equipment: Consider ENERGY STAR certified units if your system is over 10-15 years old.
Monitor Humidity Levels: Use a dehumidifier or proper ventilation to keep indoor humidity between 30% and 50%.
Check Carbon Monoxide Detectors: Ensure detectors are working, especially after furnace maintenance.
Keep Indoor Air Intake Clear: Ensure the return air vent is not restricted by furniture.
Use the Rule of 5000: If repair costs multiplied by the unit's age exceed 5,000, consider replacing the unit instead
